In my Dialogflow CX beginner tutorial, I mention that you should be familiar with Dialogflow ES before you learn CX if you want to create a well designed CX bot.
Because CX solves a specific problem – there are certain complex bots which you cannot design very easily in ES. And CX can help you build those chatbots much more easily. Another way to say the same thing:
You don’t really need CX until your bot gets fairly complex
Which brings us to another question: how to decide when to go for Dialogflow CX?
